Are You a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?
Large over-sized breasts can cause a host of physical and psychological problems, but our San Francisco breast reduction surgery can help. Overly large breasts can result in shoulder, neck and back pain. In addition, they can cause distortion of posture, and in severe cases, make breathing difficult. Large breasts can also dominate a woman’s appearance and make her look unbalanced. They can also make participation in exercise difficult or impossible. In psychological terms, ungainly stares and rude comments can lead some women to be self-conscious.*
Although the main aim of the breast reduction surgery is to reduce the volume and weight of the breast; cosmetic enhancement to fashion a normal shape remains equally important. Reduction mammaplasty techniques have been modified and refined throughout the years in order to improve the safety as well as the aesthetic results.*
*Individual results will vary in each patient.
While women of most ages can benefit, breast reduction surgeries are usually rarely performed before the breasts are fully developed. In addition, patients who plan to become pregnant following their breast reduction should consider postponing the reduction mammaplasty until after pregnancy. A woman who has had a breast reduction procedure prior to her pregnancy risks re-enlargement of her breasts.*
Reduction mammaplasty candidates are significantly overweight, it will be recommended that they participate in a weight reduction program prior to their breast reduction surgery in order to yield the best long-term results. It is also important that weight is stabilized and a weight loss program has been attempted before your breast reduction.*

About San Francisco Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours. This procedure can be performed on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.*
Once in surgery, excess breast tissue, fat and skin are diminished. The nipple and remaining underlying tissues are moved to a new, higher location. The suture line is situated around the nipple in its new position, and extends vertically down towards the under-breast crease.*
Recovering from Reduction Mammaplasty
Following your reduction mammaplasty, bandage dressings will be applied around your breasts. In addition, depending on the technique used, drains may be inserted under the wounds to drain any build-up of blood or fluid that occasionally develops after the surgery. The drainage is minimal and the drains are often removed the very next day. At this time, your bandages will be readjusted, and you will be instructed to wear a wireless compression bra for support. It is common to experience swelling and bruising of the breasts following your breast reduction which can last up to 2-3 weeks.* Patient satisfaction after breast reduction is extremely high, and many of our patients are referred by happy patients who have had breast reduction surgery in San Francisco.*
